Seeing and Imagining Are Different in the Brain
The Sistine Chapel is a truly awe-inspiring sight: a testimony to human ingenuity, effort, and creativity. No less awe-inspiring — and far less easily understood — are the mental processes that allow humans to see the chapel’s famous vaulted ceilings and the paintings that adorn them. We know more or less how the Sistine Chapel was built and decorated, but scientists are still figuring out what goes on in our brains when we see it. In an article published in the Journal of Cognitive Psychology, William L. Thompson adds to our understanding of visual perception by contrasting visual attention with visual mental imagery.

Call for Submissions: Special Issue of Attention, Perception, and Psychophysics on “Structure of Visual Working Memory”
The journal Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics, the official journal of the Psychonomic Society, is requesting submissions on the topic of the structure of visual working memory. Submissions are due by July 1, 2013 for publication in Winter 2013. We will consider regular Research Articles, Short Reports, and a limited number of Opinion/Review pieces. For Opinion / Review submissions, please send a presubmission inquiry to Jeremy Wolfe ([email protected]), Editor. This special issue is coordinated with a Symposium on the same topic to be held at the Vision Sciences Society meeting, Naples, Florida, May 10, 2013.

Motivation in Social Contexts: Theory and Practice
The upcoming conference Motivation in Social Contexts: Theory and Practice, to be held June 29 –July 2, 2013, in Krakow, Poland. The conference will be jointly sponsored by Jagiellonian University, the University of Gadansk and the Society for the Study of Motivation (SSM). It will immediately follow a small group meeting concerned with motivational, affective, and cognitive factors involved in knowledge formation (June 27-28). The small group meeting is organized by Arie Kruglanski (University of Maryland) and Arne Roets (University Ghent) and sponsored by the European Association of Social Psychology (EASP).
