Social Media Highlights – 24th Annual APS Convention
With so many great things to do and see at the 24th Annual Convention, it was hard to be at multiple places at once…Luckily, there was Twitter. Using our convention hashtag (#aps2012), attendees were able to instantly post updates and share experiences from convention! The Best Swag at Convention
CHICAGO -- Who had the best swag at the 24th APS Annual Convention? As APS attendees sought out exhibitor trail markers in their Scavenger Hunt quest to win a collection of APS prizes, their journey led them to some of the best giveaways in Chicago. Dozens of book publishers, software companies, device manufacturers and non-profits showcased their products at the biggest APS Convention ever! Some of the best swag included: OVERALL WINNER: The butterfly imprinted screen cleaner from Jones & Bartlett Learning, promoting their Learning Series’ Psychology course. WHY IT’S GREAT: Can clean your smartphone. Folds up really, really small. It’s a great visual reminder of the product.

24th Convention’s Exhibit Hall Brought ‘Diverse Perspectives’
There was much to do and see this year in the Exhibit Hall at the 24th Annual Convention of the Association for Psychological Science in Chicago. Attendees could check out the newest books for their classrooms and personal libraries, test drive the latest technology for their labs, learn about new movements and initiatives in psychology, and, of course, pick up some free promotional items! The exhibit hall was buzzing with life, as publishers from the general to the specialized presented their latest and best-selling titles in psychological science and related disciplines.

2012 Wikipedia Symposium
The 2012 APS Annual Convention featured the symposium “Wikipedia in the Classroom: Initial Responses to the Call to Action.” The symposium included a status report on the APS Wikipedia Initiative and featured presentations from APS Members who used Wikipedia articles for writing assignments in their classes. Presentations included: Recruiting and Engaging Psychologists to the APS Wikipedia Initiative Robert E. Kraut, Carnegie Mellon University, and Rosta Farzan, Carnegie Mellon University In collaboration with the APS, we have been developing processes and tools to engage members of the association and their students to improve representation of psychology articles on Wikipedia.

Writing Away Academic Anxiety
A simple, 10-minute writing exercise can significantly improve test performance for students with math anxiety. These findings were reported by Sian L. Beilock of the University of Chicago, who spoke about her research on math anxiety at the 24th APS Annual Convention before signing copies of her book Choke: The Secret to Performing Under Pressure. Beilock discussed behavioral and brain imaging work examining how students’ knowledge and general cognitive abilities interact with social and emotional factors to influence performance in academic arenas such as math.
