Scientific Exchange and ‘Giving Away’ Psychological Science

APS is dedicated to disseminating cutting-edge, groundbreaking research for the benefit of all areas of our discipline and “giving away psychology” in meaningful ways that enhance public understanding of psychological science. APS journals – including Psychological Science – help advance that vision, most recently through open access to special issues covering:

APS works to increase public engagement with psychological science by disseminating the latest research. The Public Affairs program uses everything from traditional press outreach strategies to social networking websites, including Facebook and Twitter. Research from APS journals regularly appears in more than 4,000 print and web publications worldwide. Blogs and podcasts by our own Wray Herbert can be found on the APS website as well as True/Slant.com and Huffington Post.

APS brings the latest in psychological science to you through Daily Observations on the APS website (a perfect resource for the classroom) and is developing a collection of videos — including interviews with leading researchers, talks, and discussions of journal articles — which can be used in the classroom, at no charge. Connected Convention

In May, psychological scientists from around the world gathered in Boston for the 22nd Annual APS Convention, making this event one of the most attended in APS history. The 23rd APS Annual Convention will be even bigger in Washington, DC, May 26-29, 2011, featuring pioneering mirror neuron researcher Giacomo Rizzolatti as the Keynote Speaker; APS President Mahzarin R. Banaji’s Presidential Symposium; and Kelly D. Brownell delivering the Bring the Family Address. This year’s Featured Theme Programs are on Consciousness, Behavioral Economics, and Network Analyses of Brain, Behavior, and Social Interaction.

These conventions bring together all psychological scientists to learn, teach, and advance the field. To ensure this incredible opportunity is available to as many attendees as possible, APS strives to keep registration rates as low as possible. Sharing science is at the heart of the APS mission.

Teaching Psychological Science

APS is dedicated to supporting the teaching of psychological science. Through a generous endowment from the David & Carol Myers Foundation, the APS Fund for Teaching and Public Understanding of Psychological Science was established to support a number of initiatives, including:

Your Voice

APS government relations efforts educate federal policy makers about the role of behavioral science in health, education, productivity, and other areas of public concern, and improve the visibility of psychological science and further its use in shaping public policy, including:

  • Efforts with the APS-inspired $120 million Basic Behavioral and Social Science Opportunity Network (OppNet) continue through alerts to APS Members on grant opportunities in available funding.
  • The APS-facilitated Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), propelled by a report in Psychological Science in the Public Interest
  • Strengthening global connections by collaborating with international federations to develop worldwide programs in scientific psychology.
