Each nomination must be supported by two APS members: A primary nominator is responsible for submitting the nomination form and will be asked to provide the name and email address of a secondary nominator, who will then receive a link to their portion of the nomination form via email. The primary nominator is asked to provide the nominee’s complete electronic curriculum vitae. All nominators are asked to answer each of the following questions in no more than 150 words:

  • What is your relationship with the nominee?
  • Describe the quality and/or merit of the nominee’s publications.
  • Describe the nominee’s significant discoveries, methodological innovations, and/or theoretical or empirical contributions to their research field.
  • Describe the potential broader impact of the nominee’s work.
  • How does this nominee show a commitment to diversity in science, and/or what valuable perspectives and life experiences do they contribute to the field of psychological science?
  • A major emphasis of this award is that nominees have demonstrated independence from mentors. This is most often demonstrated by publications since beginning in one’s own lab, but can be demonstrated in other ways. Please describe how this candidate demonstrates independence from their mentors in terms of their contributions to science.
  • Please offer any other comments regarding why you believe this nominee deserves to be recognized as an APS Rising Star.

Individuals being considered for Rising Star designation will be evaluated for their promise of excellence in research based on the following considerations:

  • Significant publications;
  • Significant recognitions;
  • Significant discoveries, methodological innovations, or theoretical or empirical contributions;
  • Work with potentially broad impact;
  • Commitment to diversity in science; and
  • Demonstrated independence from mentors.

Eligibility: Eligibility for the 2024 nomination period is limited to individuals who received a PhD between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2023. Extensions will be considered for nominees who have taken time away from research for reasons such as medical, disability, family care, natural disasters, active duty military service, or complications caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Nomination materials should include information supporting the need for an extension. The Rising Stars committee will consider extension requests on a case-by-case basis as the nominations are evaluated. Prior approval for an extension is not necessary.

Please consider the diverse and international nature of our field in nominating colleagues. Nominations of members of underrepresented groups in psychological science are encouraged.
