The totality of insights gleaned from studying patients undergoing surgical disconnection of their two brain halves will be presented. From discovering basic and specific neural networks dedicated to sensory, motor, and cognitive processes to conceptualizing unique capacities of the left and right brain, split-brain patients have provided a continuous source of knowledge about how our mental lives are organized in the brain. The patients’ vigorous participation in this 50 year research program will be saluted.
