Psychological Science Call for Editor Nominations

The Association for Psychological Science (APS) invites nominations for Editor of Psychological Science, one of the most influential empirical journals in the field. Psychological Science publishes original research making notable contributions to psychological science, with an emphasis on discovery, innovative research, and the range of topics it covers. Psychological Science spans the entire field, including emerging as well as established areas of research, and features studies employing novel research methodologies and the newest analytic techniques. To illustrate the range of topics, recent articles have addressed generational differences in shyness, similarities in human and chimpanzee risk preferences, the language of social touch, auditory category learning in developmental dyslexia, racial prejudice and police militarization, beta oscillations in mental time travel, and flavor sensing in utero.

The Journal has also been at the forefront of promoting improved research practices, with enhanced requirements for transparency and the reporting of research methods; a special category of editorial members, Statistical Advisors, who serve as reviewers attending specifically to methodological concerns; and recognition of authors who engage in open science practices by making data, materials, and/or preregistered design and analysis plans publicly available.

Now in its 34th year, Psychological Science is published online continually and receives more than 1,500 submissions per year from authors all over the world. The Journal is recognized internationally as a leading resource for engaging the public with our discipline, with extensive coverage in scientific, academic, and general media. Selection Criteria

Nominees must be APS Members. Criteria that will be considered in selecting the Editor include:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of, and broad perspective on, the field of psychological science
  • Understanding and appreciation of the many disciplines within the field (e.g., cognitive, social, developmental, and health psychology; behavioral neuroscience and biopsychology), including both established and emerging areas and research that integrates scientific perspectives
  • Professional accomplishment and identity within psychological science
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in psychological science
  • Demonstrated collaborative leadership experience
  • Demonstrated research, writing, reviewing, and managerial skills
  • Significant editorial experience
  • Commitment to devoting time to editorial duties
  • Demonstrated commitment to scientific integrity and ethical treatment of others

Whether you are planning to nominate anyone for this editor position or not, we want to hear from you! As a part of the editor selection process, finalist candidates are asked to provide a vision statement to the search committee, in which they lay out their vision for the journal and respond to specific questions from the committee. This important document informs the committee’s discussion and final decision. We would like to invite you to be a part of this process. What questions or prompts would you like potential Psychological Science editors to answer in their vision statements for the journal? Send your ideas and questions to [email protected]. The questions we receive will be distributed to the committee and your idea may be used in the prompt to the final candidates.

Starting Date

The Editor should be prepared to begin the transition as early as summer 2023 and to handle all new submissions beginning January 1, 2024. The term is four years. The Editor receives an annual honorarium in recognition of their service, in addition to substantial administrative support and the opportunity for course release support.

Additional material may be sent, including curricula vitae and brief statements of interest or support, but at this point in the process, a name and contact information are sufficient. Please consider the diverse and international nature of our field when nominating colleagues. Self-nominations are encouraged, as are nominations of members of historically underrepresented groups in psychological science.
