The Alliance for Open Scholarship and HELIOS are hosting a workshop at the 2023 APS Annual Convention focused on aligning our reappointment, promotion, tenure, and hiring policies with our institutional and disciplinary values. We hope to come away from this session with momentum building toward a values-aligned document and approach to reform. We welcome all levels of experience, and look forward to an engaging conversation.

Register for the 2023 APS Annual Convention to attend this workshop.

You do not need to register separately for this workshop, but if you plan on attending, please RSVP here. Please note that you must be registered for the APS Annual Convention in order to attend this workshop.

Aligning Policies and Incentives with Institutional Values

Friday, May 26, 1:00 pm –2:20 pm

Michael Dougherty, University of Maryland

Caitlin Carter, Higher Education Leadership Initiative for Open Scholarship (HELIOS) and Open Research Funders Group

This workshop will focus on strategies for thinking about how departments can better align faculty incentives with the stated values of our institutions, such as inclusion, reproducibility, and community engagement. We’ll review the current state of affairs and discuss ways in which institutional values can be centered in our assessments of faculty ranging from awards to the promotion and tenure process. Attendees will engage in hands-on activities aimed at moving individuals and departments from dialogue to action. We will then provide practical examples of reform happening on US campuses.
