Psychological Science: Call for Editor Nominations

The Association for Psychological Science (APS) invites nominations for Editor of Psychological Science, one of the most influential empirical journals in psychological science. Psychological Science publishes original research making new and notable contributions to psychological science. The Journal is marked both by an emphasis on discovery and innovative research and by the range of topics it covers. Spanning the entire spectrum of psychological science, including emerging as well as established areas of research, Psychological Science features studies employing novel research methodologies and the newest techniques of analysis. To illustrate the range of topics, recent articles have addressed the “new” statistics, behavioral genetics and cognition, neuroplasticity and deafness, the effects of stress on social support, personality in bonobos, social media and risk factors for heart disease, and emotion regulation.

The Journal has also been at the forefront of advocating for improved research practices, with enhanced requirements for reporting research methods; explicit encouragement of the use of the “new statistics” of effect sizes, confidence intervals, and meta-analyses; and special recognition of authors who have made data, materials, and/or preregistered design and analysis plans publicly available.

Now in its 25th year, Psychological Science is recognized internationally as a leading resource for engaging the public with our discipline, with extensive coverage in scientific, academic, and general media. Published online continually, the Journal receives more than 2,000 submissions per year from authors all over the world. Selection Criteria: Nominees must be APS Members. Criteria that will be considered in selecting the Editor will include:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of, and broad perspective on, the field of psychological science
  • Understanding and appreciation of the many disciplines within the field (e.g., cognitive, social, developmental, and health psychology; behavioral neuroscience and biopsychology), including both established and emerging areas and research that integrates scientific perspectives
  • Professional accomplishment and identity within psychological science
  • Demonstrated research, writing, reviewing, and managerial skills
  • Significant editorial experience
  • Commitment to devoting time to editorial duties

Starting Date: The Editor should be prepared to begin the transition as early as summer 2016 and to handle all new submissions beginning January 1, 2017. The term is four years.

Nominations: Please provide a name and contact information for each person you nominate by December 1, 2015. Additional material may be sent, including curricula vitae and brief statements of interest or support, but at this point in the process, a name and contact information are sufficient. Please consider the diverse and international nature of our field in nominating colleagues. Self-nominations are encouraged, as are nominations of members of underrepresented groups in psychological science.
